Cap Horn

Cap Horn by Elphège Proisy is an original composition for Grade 4 wind orchestra, inspired by one of the most legendary and feared places on Earth. Located at the southern tip of South America, Cape Horn fascinates and impresses in equal measure, where the oceans meet and the natural elements reveal their extraordinary power.

Throughout the work, Earth, Water and Wind become the driving forces of the musical narrative. Cape Horn itself almost takes on the role of a character: solitary, mysterious and timeless, standing as a silent witness to centuries of maritime history.

Beyond its evocation of the natural world, Cap Horn tells the story of an adventure: the journey of sailors who, for centuries, have challenged powerful winds, treacherous currents and towering waves in their attempt to round the legendary Cape Horn. The music explores the constant struggle between human beings and the elements, where fear meets wonder, vulnerability meets determination, and every mile crossed becomes a victory.

More than a simple musical journey, Cap Horn invites performers and audiences to experience the crossing from within: to feel the force of the wind, the depth and power of the ocean, and the unique emotion of reaching one of the world’s most legendary horizons.

Cap Horn was premiered in 2008 by the Brassage Wind Orchestra, conducted by Mathias Charton. The work was subsequently recorded by the same ensemble at the Conservatoire National Supérieur de Musique et de Danse de Paris (CNSMDP).
