La isla Juan Fernandez

La Isla Juan Fernández is an original work for concert band (Grade 2.5), inspired by the fascinating history of Juan Fernández Island, off the coast of Chile.

At the beginning of the 18th century, Scottish sailor Alexander Selkirk was abandoned on the island, where he lived alone for several years. His extraordinary experience later inspired Daniel Defoe in the creation of the famous character of Robinson Crusoe. This true story, at the crossroads of adventure, isolation and imagination, is at the heart of the composition.

Through colorful and evocative music, La Isla Juan Fernández takes performers and audiences on a musical journey of adventure, discovery and nostalgia. The different episodes evoke sailors’ tales, the adventures of privateers and the legends associated with the island, as well as the extraordinary fate of the man who lived there in isolation, far from civilization.

With its Grade 2.5 difficulty level, the work is particularly suitable for concert bands and youth wind ensembles, while offering performers many opportunities to explore contrasts, orchestral colors and musical expression.
