Ceremonial Hymn

Ceremonial Hymn is a majestic concert march for concert band, combining solemnity, celebration and a distinctly British character. The work is inspired by the noble and lyrical writing of Edward Elgar, particularly the iconic atmosphere of his Pomp and Circumstance marches.

The music is built around a broad and hymn-like main theme that gives the work its ceremonial and majestic character. This central idea is contrasted with more rhythmic and lively passages, gradually bringing greater momentum, brightness and energy to the musical discourse.

With its unmistakably British atmosphere, Ceremonial Hymn is particularly suited to ceremony openings, outdoor concerts, official events and festive occasions. The writing gives the concert band the opportunity to develop both power and grandeur while preserving a strong lyrical dimension.

The work is intended for ensembles looking to explore the great British tradition of ceremonial concert marches through an original and accessible addition to the contemporary concert band repertoire.

Ceremonial Hymn was premiered in 2012, conducted by Florent Bonnetain, for the inauguration of the new premises of the Harmonie-École de Musique d’Heyrieux in Isère, France, where composer Elphège Proisy taught.
